Interim Leadership

Why consider an interim leader
- Highly experienced, mature, leadership at short notice
- Clean slate leadership not burdened by past
- Seen by all constituencies as neutral (and temporary)
- Objective: True critical friend can give honest evaluation of systems, personnel, and school culture influence from internal loyalties or politics
- Appointing internal candidate can create winner/loser situation and does not imply permanent successor is found (if internal interim is not appointed to the substantive position, it can create issues for the future)
- Help prevent a difficult situation becoming a crisis
- Protects permanent search. No rush. Allows internal candidates to be equally and fairly considered
- Demonstrates professional attitude of Board investing in transition management
Why consider a hybrid (remote/on-site) interim
- Flexible engagement model: intensive engagement during critical periods and oversight during routine operations
- Visit frequency can be flexible
- Technology enables daily management of staff, students and operations
- Strategic focus on high-impact activities: onsite visits for Board meetings, retreats, community events etc
- Continue during transition to new substantive Head (can be backup/advisor for a less experienced new Head)
- Can be substantially less costly
